The Smallmouth Buffalo Record for Oklahoma has just been shattered by a bass angler at Lake Konawa.
The last two state record smallmouth buffalo had been reeled out of the waters of Lake Canton near Watonga, but the lake’s streak was broken August 15th when Marvin Williams of Noble shattered that record with his 44 lb., 2 ounce catch out of Lake Konawa.
Williams caught the giant smallmouth buffalo on a Tiny Fluke while using eight-pound test. The previous record smallmouth buffalo weighed 38 pounds, 3.8 ounces and was caught by Rodney Meyer of Balko on just 12-pound test.
What makes Williams’ catch so unique is that he was actually fishing for white bass, and though he knew about smallmouth buffalo, he had never caught one previous to his state record catch.
“I had seen them before, but I’d never caught one,” Williams said.
The record fish was brought into Tink & Sals Bait & Tackle and later certified on scales at the Oklahoma Fisheries Research Lab operated by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
“Normally, state records are broken by mere ounces,” said Barry Bolton, fisheries chief for the Wildlife Department. “This one blew the previous record out of the water!”
For a complete list of record fish and the procedures regarding state record fish, consult the “Oklahoma Fishing Guide” or log on to www.wildlifedepartment.com. If you think you may have hooked a record fish, it is important that you weigh the fish on an Oklahoma State Department of Agriculture certified scale and the weight is verified by a Wildlife Department employee.
Story compliments of the Oklahoma Wildlife Department.

Guide David Clark of Fish On! Guide Service sends us this amazing fishing report from Lake Sooner:
FISH ON!!! Well it started off kinda slow, but ended with a very big bang. After weathering a few thunderstorms and a couple of dry spells, we caught the biggest Striper I have ever seen caught out of Lake Sooner.
We caught it and had three more on at the same time. Two of the other three came off. The third one is still hooked and swimming around with a Ugly Stick attached to his behind. The fourth one was this 25lber. He sure did seem on the skinny side. It measured 42 inches long and had a 24 inch girth. I think for the length it should of been around 35lbs. It had a very big head.
We tried to release it but it would not swim off. We first thought he was hung up, but from good experience I know there is nothing there to hang up on (82.68 blue). Then he started taking some drag and the fight was on. It was on a down line so that made it even more fun.
It was the biggest fish my client had ever caught and we were all very proud of him. By the end of the day we had caught 35 Hybrids and a few more small Stripers. The water temperature was 86 degrees and we were in 35ft of water most of the day. Fish ON!!!!
Editor’s Note: What a monster! How much fun!! If you want to go fishing with David, visit his website at: www.FishOnOK.com.

Avid fisherman Chris R. send us this Lake Lawtonka fishing report:
These two monsters came out of Lake Lawtonka in the shallows. I was using the Tournament Series® Stik-O™ Soft Plastic Jerkbait – 6” (candy corn) from Bass Pro and they work well!
The largemouth bass are feeding, but I have not had a smallmouth bass keeper yet this year. I will be back at Lawtonka on Sunday after church to see if anything is biting.
Editor’s Note: Way to go Chris! How much did those Hawgs weight? We look forward to hearing about your Sunday fishing trip.

Spent the day today at Lake Elmer Thomas with my brother in-law Peter R. from California. It was our last chance to fish before his return, so we tried fishing a new lake that neither of us had fished before.
Avid fisherman and aspiring pro Mike G. sends us this report from Lake Vanderwork:
The bite was slow but we did pretty good by looking for bait fish along the banks and casting small cranks toward the schools.
With the fish being a little small to lip and double treble hooks on the baits, it was a great opportunity to put my Fish Grip to work for me. The Fish Grip was perfect for holding the small bass still while removing the hooks and I even managed to go all day without getting stuck by a fin.
